FUT vs FUE Procedures

The Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) process involves removing a small strip of tissue from the back of the head, from which the donor hair follicles will be extracted. The hair follicles are harvested from the strip by a skilled clinical team before being individually transplanted to the recipient areas. In most cases, and especially cases of advanced hair loss, FUT is the preferred method because it allows the physician to fully utilize the scalp area to deliver results consistent with patient expectations. FUT typically allows for the greatest number of grafts to be transplanted in a single session.

In a Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedure, each follicular unit is individually taken directly from the scalp with no strip of tissue being removed. Hair follicles are removed in a random fashion and the result is less density in the donor area that many say is not even noticeable. Clients who prefer to wear their hair very short may prefer this over FUT because it leaves no linear scar. However, fewer number of follicles can be harvested in this procedure and clients who had advanced hair loss may require a second procedure.

Common questions about surgical hair restoration in Buffalo, NY

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) involves removing a strip of scalp from the donor area to harvest follicles, allowing the largest number of grafts in a single session. FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) removes individual follicles directly, leaving no linear scar, and is ideal for patients who prefer to wear their hair short. Dr. Wisiorek will recommend the best approach based on your specific needs.

The HARRTS technique involves advanced robotic and AI-assisted technology for precision hair follicle extraction and implantation. HRA Buffalo is the only hair restoration practice in New York utilizing this technology, which improves accuracy, reduces transection rates, and enhances overall procedural outcomes.

Yes. Both FUT and FUE procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, meaning patients arrive in the morning, undergo their procedure, and return home the same day. There is no hospitalization required.

The number of grafts varies by technique and patient anatomy. FUT typically allows for a greater number of grafts per session, making it preferred for patients with more extensive hair loss. Your personalized treatment plan will include a graft estimate following your consultation.

Most patients return to light activities within a few days. The transplanted area may have small scabs that resolve within 7 to 10 days. Strenuous activities should be avoided for about a month. New hair growth begins at 3 to 4 months, with full results visible at 12 months.
